Brian Kick
Helix Charter High School Chief Information Officer
La Mesa, CA
Brian Kick currently serves as the Chief Information Officer at Helix Charter High School. He has a long history at Helix starting as an AVID tutor in 1987, then a science teacher from 1991 –1998. During his time as a teacher he co-authored Helix’s first charter.
Brian left Helix in 1998 when he saw an opportunity to have a broader impact on public education working for AVID, an organization whose mission paralleled Helix’s: Closing both the achievement and opportunity gaps, and making college and/or post secondary education accessible for ALL STUDENTS after high school.
While at AVID Center from 1998-2016, Brian worked in a variety of capacities focused on integrating technology in all aspects at AVID. As the organization grew, he transitioned through many roles, including Science Coordinator, Director of Professional Development for Western States, Senior Learning Designer, Director of Instruction Design and e-Learning Arts, and was Director of Information & Technology for nine years. Brian also served on the Helix Charter Board from 2009–2013 during his tenure at AVID.
Brian returned to Helix in 2016 because he wanted to reduce his commute, travel less, and spend more time at home with his wife and two boys.
As a systems thinker, Brian brings perspectives from IT, curriculum development, and ed tech into the design process.
