Messy, Mobile Art Making: Exploring a Tra-digital Approach to Learning
Come and make a mess as we seamlessly combine hands-on practices and processes, tactile materials and mobile devices for creativity! This workshop will provide you with the confidence, tools and tactics you need to enhance creativity, visual literacy and divergent thinking using mobile devices for learning in your classroom. Full of apps, lesson ideas and concrete examples from real classrooms, this course is a lot of fun and very hands-on. We’ll mix paint and pixels, iPads and everything else, as we explore lessons unpacking the concept of abstraction, use reflected images to create kaleidoscopes, get Escher-esque drawing digital tessellations, create images with type, make talking sculptures and build timelapse towers. You'll laugh as we learn about some seriously useful pedagogical approaches for rich, cross-curricular lesson design. Want more? Well, you’ll have to come to the workshop! Must have an iPad. Also, a number of free apps will be required for participation in this 'hands-on' workshop. Please watch for an email to you two weeks before this event with a list of those to download prior to arriving in Palm Springs.

Are You Ready to #GoOpen?
#GoOpen is a national movement that encourages states, school districts, and educators to use openly licensed educational materials to transform teaching and learning. Openly licensed educational resources have enormous potential to increase access to high-quality educational opportunities in the United States. Let’s look at how transitioning to openly licensed educational materials has enabled school districts to empower teachers, keep content relevant and timely, and repurpose funding typically spent on static textbooks for other pressing needs, such as investing in the transition to digital learning.

The ‘Maker Movement’: It’s About ‘Making’ Up Your Own Mind
What is the maker movement? Is it only about ‘making with electronics’ and ‘coding’? No. I don’t believe it should be. ‘Making’ should focus on taking charge of, and building, your mind—your learning. Making objects and artifacts is a means to that end! ‘Making’ is at the heart of constructionism, tinkering and inquiry. In this session, we will explore how Seymour Papert’s thoughts have merged with other great educational theories and practices to provide rich, constructivist environments for today’s students.
